MTAA Takes the Lead in Digital Health
Australia’s healthcare system is under growing strain, yet evidence-based digital health technologies like digital therapeutics (DTx) and remote patient monitoring (RPM) remain underfunded and underutilised.
The Report finds that Australia lacks an adequate funding pathway for digital health innovations. As a result, patients miss out on proven technologies that improve outcomes, clinicians face barriers to sustainable adoption, and Australia risks falling behind global leaders such as Germany, France, and the United States, where specific mechanisms for digital health solution funding already exist.
A Clear Pathway Forward
The report proposes a phased national funding framework to integrate DTx and RPM into Australia’s healthcare system. Key recommendations include:
- Establishing a dedicated HTA pathway for digital health
- Creating a National DTx/RPM Library for quality assurance
- Including technology costs in MBS, ABF, and private insurance
- Enabling collaborative commissioning between Commonwealth, states, and PHNs
These reforms would turn fragmented pilots into permanent, system-wide adoption of remote care, driving better outcomes for patients and greater sustainability for Australia’s health system.
